Manheim Township Scrimmage

The Scrimmage

McDevitt outclassed the Blue Streaks, dominating the down-and-distance first half 21-0, with both teams playing starters. The Crusader reserves turned in a second successive impressive performance in the second half, holding Manheim Township scoreless and tacking on a couple of touchdown passes.

The Quarterbacks

Junior Alec Werner continues to improve, posting an 8 for 14, 161 yard performance with two scores. The first touchdown pass was a dart to senior Shaun Seif on a crossing route, with the speedy wideout outracing the Manheim Twp. secondary for an exciting 81 yard score. The second came when Werner patiently waited for the play to develop and then found junior Brian Lemelle in the end zone from 5 yards out. Werner capped his fine performance by scrambling for a 46 yard touchdown run. His one interception came on the last play of the half on a desperation throw. Backups Nick Marsilio and Adam Williams had good moments, too, combining for two additional touchdown passes.

A Few Stats

Seif grabbed 3 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown while Lemelle added 46 yards on 4 catches. Junior Darnell Holland had 5 carries for 37 yards and Werner ran 3 times for 43 yards.

The Defense

Once again the McDevitt defense was suffocating, holding heralded MT quarterback Brennan Scott to 2 completions in 5 attempts and sacking him twice. The Blue Streaks could only manage 30 total yards in 6 first half possessions, with linebackers Tariq Spence, Alan Holman and Nate Monroe in the middle of the action. The Crusader reserves continued the success in the second half.

Thunderfoot!

Junior placekicker Connor Maloney put on quite a show at the start of the scrum, as kickers from both teams lined up for field goals. Maloney was perfect on every one of his 4 attempts, including a booming 43 yarder that easily cleared the crossbar. He was also perfect on his 3 PAT's. Connor spent the summer starring for his soccer club team, the PA Classics. The Classics made it to the national finals, where they lost to the LA Galaxy. This fall Maloney will pull double duty as a placekicker and a key member of McDevitt's soccer team, which is expected to challenge for league and district titles. He'll be joined by his brother, a freshman, and by his father, Terence, who is the team's coach.

Future Stars

Among the impressive players in the second half were freshman receivers Tyrone Gibson and Amechie Walker; freshman running back Sheldon Snell; sophomore linemen Johnny Yetter and Jordan Mosely; and senior defensive back Aaron Willis, who ended the scrimmage with a sparkling interception and return that was stopped just short of the goal line.
