SCORING

Each team managed a score when the first teams squared off. McDevitt scored on QB Werner's 9 yard scramble on the last play of the Crusader's second possession ( teams ran 10 play series and then alternated) and Elizabethtown reached pay dirt on a 21 yard pass on their 8th play of the second series. The McDevitt reserves were impressive and entertaining, tallying a 70 yard scoring run by frosh Robinson, an 80 yard scamper by sophomore Lawson and a 15 yard gallop by freshman Sheldon Snell.

THE NEW QUARTERBACKS

Werner played well in his first start. After a shaky beginning which included consecutive incompletions and an interception off a tipped ball, the junior settled down and finished 5-9 for 112 yards and the scramble for a touchdown. Backup freshman Nick Marsilio seemed to struggle with the quick pace of the game (which is to be expected for a freshman) but also calmed down enough to connect with sophomore Austin Anderson for a 70 yard gain.

A WEALTH OF RUNNING BACKS

The taliback position was a four-headed monster, with each runner finding the end zone (although Holland's 80 yard scamper was flagged for holding). Lawson uses his quickness to move laterally and exploit holes where he finds them. Holland heads north and south after an efficient cut and races down field. Robinson may have the best balance of power and speed, while the rugged Snell seeks contact before turning on the jets. Head Coach Jeff Weachter has multiple options at this position.

THE DEFENSE

With all of the starters in the Crusader defense was overwhelming, often meeting the E-town runners in the backfield. The ends and linebackers were successful in preventing sweeps from turning the corner and the pass rush was an avalanche of bodies. Elizabethtown's limited success in the passing game came when McDevitt had an all-underclassman defensive line and a couple of substitutions in the secondary. This group should be able to keep the opponent from scoring while the offense gets used to the new starters.
